Philae Temple Aswan | Island Temple of Goddess Isis
Philae Temple
Philae Temple is an ancient iconic structure located on the Island Agilkia in Aswan, as one of the most fascinating ancient structures in Egypt. Devoted to the goddess Isis, it is a magnificent complex of temples that looks like a blissful escape and a strong impression of ancient Egyptian beliefs, myths, and styles.
Philae Temple used to sit on Philae Island, only that with the building of the Aswan High Dam, it was moved up on Agilkia Island to be above the high water level. Such a marvellous piece of engineering done by the UNESCO enabled the conservation of one of the most valued landmarks of Egypt. Arrival by boat to the site plays an important role in the magical sense of discovery and encapsulates the feeling of discovery as the temple gradually climbs out of the waterline.
Among the notable features in the temple is the mammisi (birth house) which is a symbolic birth house of Horus, that is the son of Isis. Complex reliefs and tall columns garnished with floral capitals depict the elegance and beauty of the Ptolemaic period building. Philae Temple also has much Greco-Roman influence in it as the various elements of other cultures are integrated to form a whole.
As the sun goes down, Philae Temple becomes an inexplicable sight to see at the Sound and Light Show that narrates the story of Isis and Osiris, using colorful lights, music, and narration. It is a surrounding effect which gives an emotional twist to you on your visit.
Philae Temple is one of the most interesting places to visit in Aswan when you are a history junkie, a spiritual soul or even a tourist in search of a serene beauty. The peaceful location and the mythological status still do impress everyone who visits its holy territory.
